12/14 Scholarship Fund 2005-2006

Every Scarsdale household recently received an appeal for donations to support the SHS PTA Scholarship Fund. This fund provides grants to our own graduating seniors who need financial aid to attend college.

Even in Scarsdale there is great need. Job loss, corporate downsizing, divorce, illness, and death: these events can have devastating effects on a family’s ability to pay for a college education. Each year the need increases. The fund is administered under strict rules of confidence and 100% of all funds raised go directly to students.  The scholarship money comes solely from donations made by Scarsdale residents, businesses and organizations. Our donation envelope allows gifts to be made to honor a teacher for a special event or as a holiday gift. This is a gift teachers greatly respect. Honoring a teacher with a donation is a high school tradition, but one that is now available for all Scarsdale teachers.

Please consider a donation for your Holiday gift this year. In Scarsdale, we focus on our youth and enthusiastically support their educational goals.  Help us insure that all students in Scarsdale, who have worked so hard for acceptance to colleges, have the opportunity to attend.  Please be generous to this community-wide appeal.

Give the gift of education for the holidays.  Donations may be sent at any time to:

12/14 Important Message from SHS Principal John Klemme

December 15, 2005

Dear Parents,

Earlier this fall, we experienced several false fire alarms.  I spoke to students via the public address system and explained the dangers associated with a pulled alarm, most notably the diversion of important fire prevention resources where they were not needed and the implications for those who are truly in need of such assistance. Teachers also took the opportunity to reinforce this message with students in brief discussions. I also asked for any information about the individual(s) who may have pulled the false alarms.

For the next few weeks, we had no additional false alarms.  Unfortunately, on Wednesday, December 7, another false alarm was pulled during seventh period.  Students and staff members, most without coats, were forced to stand outside in frigid weather for over twenty minutes while the fire department located the false alarm and gave permission for all of us to re-enter the building.  I spoke to students the next morning on the p.a. and indicated that I would be consulting with the Principal’s Cabinet and with our teacher leadership about how we should respond to continued false alarms.

I am writing to inform you that in the event of another false alarm, we will impose a closed campus at the High School for a period of time.  Students who have free periods will be required to report to one of several locations, and no student will be allowed to leave the building during the lunch period.  I am aware that this action may be perceived as punishing the many for the acts of a single individual, but it is vital that we impress upon our students that false alarms cannot be tolerated in our school environment.  Our students enjoy considerable freedom of passage compared to other high schools, and it my hope that our students will be inconvenienced to the point where they will identify the person responsible for the pulled alarms.  At a minimum, this will serve as a statement of the extreme displeasure of the administration and faculty at the recurrence of false alarms and may foreshadow more permanent suspension of student freedoms in the building.

Clearly, this is not my preference for the climate of our school.  In the absence of any accountability for the pulled alarms, however, it remains our only recourse.  I want you to know in advance that we may have to invoke this sanction should another false alarm occur.  And, as always, I invite you to discuss the situation with your child and to reinforce the message we are trying to send.  We need to return to normalcy, and the continued interruption of classes and inconvenience to students and staff may become our most important priority in the event of another pulled alarm.

Sincerely,

John Klemme

12/5 Board of Education Meetings - SHS Class Size is on the Agenda

Dear Parents,

The topic of SHS class size will be on the agendas of the next two Board of Ed meetings:

December 12th: 8:00pm at SHS-Rooms 170-172 and
January 9th: 8:00pm at the Quaker Ridge School Auditorium.

At the December 12th meeting, Dr. McGill will respond to questions raised since the November 8th work session by the PTA Executive Committee and by members of the community.  Public comments will be welcome at this meeting, or you may submit them to the Board via email at: BoardofEd@scarsdaleschools.org .

At the January 9th meeting, the Board will discuss the information presented earlier in order to develop a sense of direction for the Board's proposal for this year's District budget.  Although the formal Board budget proposal will not be presented until February, the Board hopes to reach a consensus at this meeting on the extent of the need for additional HS faculty to be accounted for in next year's budget.  As always, public comments also will be welcome at the January 9th meeting.

We hope to have a strong showing of parents at these two meetings.  Remember, there is strength in numbers!

11/12 9th graders to examine healthy vs. unhealthy relationships

9th graders to examine healthy vs. unhealthy relationships
Looking Glass Players will explore teen dating in 11/15 assembly

On November 15, the Looking Glass Players will come to SHS to perform “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” for the entire 9th grade.  The program, performed by teens trained in the subject of teen dating violence, explores relationships and includes an audience Q&A with the actors—who remain in character—at the end.

Sponsored by the Scarsdale Coalition on Family Violence and SHS Student Government, the event is designed to help freshmen gain a greater understanding of what makes a healthy vs. an unhealthy relationship. The Looking Glass Players, a theater group located in Northern Westchester, have performed this program widely for more than seven years.

“It’s always amazing how students in the audience really confront the characters on their behavior,” says Pamela Levine, cofounder and director of the Looking Glass Players.

The program presents a great opportunity for parents, teachers and administrators to initiate discussions on healthy dating.  Teens are not apt to talk about their first intimate relationships—so it’s vital that adults talk about the building blocks for healthy relationships and also be alert to the often unrecognized warning signs of teen dating violence.

If you are interested in more information about the Scarsdale Technology Workshop, please read the entire letter from Jerri Crisci presented here:

Dear Scarsdale Parents:

On November 16-18, a group of teachers, librarians, technology coordinators, and administrators will be visiting Scarsdale to examine our technology program. The focus of their visit is to examine how Scarsdale teachers and students use technology for research. Using a critical friends model, they will look at technology projects to provide us with feedback about our program. Even though our technology program has won many awards, we are interested in improving our practice to meet the needs of students, parents, and teachers.

All of the visitors have been trained in the Tri-State model of program evaluation. This model will examine our program curriculum in fifteen areas. Most recently, our K-12 math program was the subject of a Tri-State evaluation.

As a member of a consortium of high performing school districts, Scarsdale's curriculum must be evaluated every three to four years. The district's computer teachers and librarians have been preparing for this visit for over a year.

All Scarsdale parents are invited to complete an online survey that will be used to provide feedback about our program to the visiting Tri-State team. The survey is very easy to complete, and shouldn't take more than two minutes of your time. The survey should be
completed by Monday, November 14th at NOON. You can find the survey here:

Thank you for participating in our evaluation.

Dear Parents,

I recently received information from the New York State Civil Liberties Union regarding clarification of military recruitment policies authorized under the No Child Left Behind Act.  As many of you know, this act requires schools to provide military recruiters with the names and directory information of juniors and seniors whose parents do not exercise the "opt-out" provision of the legislation.  We have mailed these opt-out forms to parents for each year that the law has been in effect, and many, if not most of you, have returned them, instructing us to withhold your child's name from recruiters.

The NYSCLU notes several clarifications that I am obligated to share with you:

*A student who is 18 years of age may opt out himself/herself without parental approval.  A student under the age of 18 must have the parent opt-out for him/her.

*You may revoke your opt-out of the process at any time while your child is a student at Scarsdale High School.  Similarly, you may opt-out for your child at any time through written notification to the school.  Prior to this clarification, schools operated on the premise that all forms must be turned in by October 14th.  If you choose to opt-out and have not done so, please complete the form that is attached or have your child who is 18 and agrees to do so use the student form. IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY SENT IN YOUR OPT-OUT FORM, YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO SO AGAIN UNLESS YOU WISH TO MODIFY IT IN SOME MANNER.  Parents of freshmen and sophomores do not need to return the opt-out form since the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Defense have told schools that they will ask for information about students in the eleventh and twelfth grades.

*You may specify that only military recruiters be denied access to student names and directory information.  Institutions of Higher Education may continue to receive this information if you wish.

For further information about these and other matters related to military recruitment in the schools. please consult www.nyclu.org

Sincerely,

John Klemme

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Federal law requires school officials to provide names, addresses, and telephone numbers of high school students to military recruiters and colleges that request this information.  While we are committed to protecting the confidentiality of our students, we must comply with the law.

Unless you notify us in writing that you do not consent to the release of your child's information, we must disclose your child's name, address, and telephone number to military recruiters and colleges that request it.

Please be aware that you can change your options at any time.  If you do not submit the form now, you may still opt out at any time during your child's school career and decide not to release his/her information.

Your child also has a right to request that his/her information not be released.  We encourage you to discuss this decision with your child.

10 /19 Concert Friday October 21st to help Katrina victims

Dear Parents,
My name is Steffi Decker and I am the President of the Scarsdale High School Government and am writing you on behalf of our school and community.  As I assume you are aware, there has been much discussion  as to how this community can respond and together take a stand and  help those in Louisiana and Missouri who have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  While many separate community organizations have already taken steps towards this goal, I would like to invite you to what will be the first entire community-wide effort toward helping those who are in need.

On Friday, October 21st 2005, from 7:00pm-10:00pm in the High School auditorium, there will be a benefit concert organized by the Scarsdale High  School government coordinating with the Jabberwocky Club and will be starring some of Scarsdale High School's most talented students.  We hope you will join us in what will be a magical night. This is a time for the community to come together, and while enjoying wonderful performances and each other's company, we can raise funds that have the potential to change lives.

If you are unable to attend, but would like to donate money for this cause, you can send a check to the high school, (Scarsdale High School, 1057 Post Rd, Scarsdale NY 10583,) made out to Scarsdale High School, attn. Neil Ginsberg (the government faculty advisor).

I would like to be able to tell you which organization your funds will be going to; however, the school community has yet to make a final decision as to where we will make our contribution.  We want to make sure we take ample time to consider a variety of organizations, and therefore will not be making a decision until early November.
Additionally, if there is an organization that you think we should consider we would love to hear from you, so please do not hesitate to contact me.

My email is Topgoal99@aol.com and I would love to hear any suggestions, comments or concerns.

Thank you for your time and consideration, and I hope to see you Friday night.

 Sincerely,
Steffi Decker & the SHS Government
