Maroon and White, a non-profit organization, supports and encourages Scarsdale High School students in their athletic endeavors by, among other things, recognizing them at awards dinners, sponsoring Raider Pride weekends, night football and the Holiday Basketball Tournament, and donating gifts to the high school physical education and athletic programs. Recent gifts include an ice maker, team pinnies, floor and competition mats, baseball tees, fitness training balls, a tennis ball machine, and a Scarsdale flag. Our main source of funding is the monies raised through the publications of the Sports Journal distributed to athletes and their parents at least three times during the year.

Dear Fellow Parents:

As you know, by facilitating a high cultural standard, Friends of Music & the Arts helps make Scarsdale the special community it is. We help enhance the music and arts programs in every school in the district. These excellent programs boost your children's creativity, and study after study have proven the positive impact that arts education has on academic excellence.
100% of the funds we generate go directly back into the community. In these tough economic times and with additional district budget cuts looming, your generosity is needed more than ever. Your support - whether at a $25 member level or at an additional level up to our $500 philanthropist level - will help ensure that Scarsdale's focus on arts education remains robust.
Here are some of the ways we contribute to enriching the education of your children:
· Elementary schools: instrument purchases, the 3rd grade music program enhancements, brand new permanent art display cases in the hallways, sheet music, art supplies and our new Scarsdale Young Writer's Review
· Scarsdale Middle School: promotion and supplies for special events like last year's Coral Reef Exhibition, plus purchases of faculty requested musical equipment and art supplies that they could otherwise not afford
· Scarsdale High School: permanent art display cases, funding for arts-related clubs, hospitality at concerts and events, greatly appreciated Recognition Awards and Scholarship programs, and brand new technology equipment
We are your voice at district budget planning meetings, helping to preserve strong arts funding. We keep an ongoing, open dialogue with school arts faculty and administration to make certain they are serving the needs of our students, and we inform the community about music and performing arts, drama and art productions throughout the year.
Our new website http://scarsdalearts.org/ features a continually refreshed display of art, music, and creative writing from our students at all levels, and it is a valuable repository of local art and music resources, summer camps, enrichment programs, scholarship and award programs. Please check it out.
The more members we have, the louder our voice. So please Join us or renew your membership right now online http://scarsdalearts.org/JoinUs/tabid/73/Default.aspx. (If it is more convenient, simply download the attached membership form and mail it in.) Thank you.

Would you like to have input in Scarsdale Board of Education policy, but are unable to devote the substantial amount of time a position on the School Board demands? Consider running for election to be a member of the non-partisan committee that selects the candidates to run for Scarsdale's School Board.
The School Board Nominating Committee, which meets several Sunday afternoons between January and March, is the group that identifies, proposes, and nominates qualified candidates to run for the School Board. The SBNC consists of 30 voting members, representing each of the five school districts. Each member is elected to serve a three-year term, elections being held in January. The goal is to identify and nominate the best candidate to serve on the Scarsdale Board of Education.
We are looking for volunteers to run in this year's election. This is your opportunity to serve your community and have important input in selecting those individuals who have ultimate responsibility for policy decisions that directly impact our schools. Excellence in education is highly valued in Scarsdale. To maintain that tradition, consider seeking a position on the School Board Nominating Committee.
Interested in joining? Need more information? Visit www.scarsdalesbnc.com, complete a biographical form online and submit a candidate petition with ten signatures to SBNC Administrative Committee, P. O. Box H172, Scarsdale, NY 10583. For additional details about the school board nominating process, please contact the SBNC Administrative Committee's chairperson, Susan Ross at susan.ross@verizon.net .

Our first SHS PTA meeting is September 23, 2009 at 7pm in the Little Theatre on the third floor of SHS. We will have a welcome reception for new families to the district and SHS's new dean, Nancy Costa. The business portion of the PTA meeting will start at 7:30pm.
We have a very exciting program planned for the evening. Our guest speaker will be Dr. Suniya Luthar, Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University's Teachers College. Her talk is entitled, "Overdrive: How Too Much Ambition Can Harm Kids." Dr. Luthar observes that all parents want the best for their children, but many could be putting their kids in harm's way as a result. Whether from an affluent background or just struggling to get by, parents today want the most for their children and often sacrifice a great deal to provide what they believe is the "ticket to success." Pediatricians and psychologists report more and more kids, many of them from affluent families, coming to them stressed-out, fatigued, and overwhelmed. The kids are under increasing pressure from their parents to be perfect; excelling in school, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Dr. Suniya Luthar found that parental and societal expectations of perfection are driving behavioral problems--including substance abuse--in wealthy suburban children, as well as in other populations. According to Luthar, "For many of us, I don't think we're aware of many of the risks and pressures that can arise, paradoxically, from trying to do the best for our children." Join us as we hear more about this unique challenge affecting today's families. Dr. Luthar will present us with her research, and give us practical ways to shift the tide in our own families.

Parents of Freshmen enrolled in Studio Art Foundation and any other interested parents:
As you must know by now from your children, the Art Dept is taking the Studio Art Foundation students on a field trip to DIA:Beacon. There are actually 3 trips this semester, each class will go on one trip, and all 3 trips are within this and next week. The museum requires 1 adult for every 10 students . We are in need of 2 additional chaperones per trip. The schedule of trips:
Friday Sept 18 - sections 01, 03
Monday Sept 21 - sections 02, 04, 05
Thursday Sept 24 - sections 06, 07
If you'd like to chaperone the trip your child is on... check their schedules.. the course info is:
1st semester Studio Art Foundation course # 7004 -01 (or 02,03, etc)
For each day, we are scheduled to leave school at 9am and return by 2pm. The museum is in Beacon, NY and the trip takes a little over one hour. The students will be divided into groups of 10 and tour the museum with a docent. Each chaperone will be with one group.
The bus leaves from the circular driveway near the track.
We are bringing bag lunches.
DIA is the premiere museum for large scale minimalist sculptures, drawings and paintings. It provides a unique opportunity to see art work that is often difficult to find in most museums and galleries due to the scale of the work. It is housed in the former Nabisco Cracker box factory. It is a truly wonderful experience for our students and we are dependent on volunteer chaperones to make these trips happen.
We apologize for the late notice, and would be most appreciative of any assistance you may offer.

Thank you for supporting Maroon and White.
It has come to our attention that there is some queuing of cars on the Post Road at the height of drop off and pick up. To improve traffic flow, please refrain from stopping in front of the first door at the Post Road entrance. At drop off, please use more of the driveway and drop off at the second door or beyond. This will allow more cars to fit in the entrance driveway. At pick up, please don't stop in front of the first door and wait for your child. If you don't see your child,
please move forward and park on the side beyond the second door. This simple change in habit by parents at drop off and pick up could improve the traffic flow significantly at the Post Road entrance.
Thank you for your support,
Julie Hoofnagle

Maroon & White is currently soliciting ads for its 2009-10 Sports Journal.
Maroon & White is the parent booster organization that supports and encourages athletics at SHS and donates items not funded by the school budget that enrich the physical education program and enhance athletic facilities for all SHS students. Recent gifts include scoreboards and shot clocks, team chairs and benches, athletic training machines, and a video communication system. Maroon & White also sponsors the Sports Awards Dinners each season, Raider Price Weekends, and the Maroon & White Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Ads are solicited only once each year (NOW!) and appear in all 3 Journal publications. Journals are distributed to all athletes and their families each season (fall, winter and spring) at the awards dinners. Students and parents read the Journals at these dinners (and save them) and eagerly search for their team picture and parent's ad. Welcome Freshman Parents
The College and Careers Center invites students and their parents to stop by the Center and browse through our reference materials. Though it is quite early for you to search for your ninth graders' college, the Center offers literature on all varieties of summer programs. We provide a list of these programs categorized by type of activities offered, location and contact information.
During the second half of your child's junior year, when it is time to begin the college search, we encourage all students and parents to take advantage of the many resources we have, some of which are available only to educators. If your family is planning a vacation and you would like to include a trip to visit colleges, we offer books and maps to help plan your itinerary. We will help you navigate the college search process and offer assistance with the Naviance computer program, recommend appropriate guidebooks, and plan college visits. We also provide a list of scholarships available to your child, most of which are based on merit, not financial need.
The College and Career Center is located in room 336, (down the hall from the school nurse). Our phone number is 721-2542. We are open every school day from 9:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. (1:00 on Friday). Our volunteers look forward to helping you begin this very exciting stage in your education!

Dear Parents:
The Scarsdale Community Youth Service Project is a partnership of Scarsdale Schools, Scarsdale Village, and Scarsdale & Edgemont Family Counseling Service. The project places a team of mental health professionals in the community as a resource for adolescents and their parents. Youth Outreach Workers provide a range of services including individual and group counseling, family assessments, crisis intervention and referral services. Youth Outreach Workers collaborate routinely with parents, school administrators, High School Deans, Police, and village officials.
This year the team of Youth Outreach Workers on the High School level consists of Lauren Pomerantz, LMSW and Terry Frank, LCSW. Terry will be joining the Youth Service Project this September and is looking forward to her new position. Most recently Terry was the school social worker at Blind Brook USFD. For over eight years, she worked with students, parents, staff and the community. Terry has developed and facilitated numerous programs that foster healthy decision-making. Both Lauren and Terry will provide individual on-site counseling and groups for students. This provides a comfortable environment for teenagers to discuss issues such as drug/alcohol use, peer pressure, coping skills, self image, and relationship issues. Youth outreach also maintains an office at SFCS in the Harwood Building.
The Youth Service Project on the high school level also offers a variety of resources which stress the importance of connection between teens and their families, their schools, and the community. One program is Peer Counseling. Peer Counselors are high school students who provide "purposeful friendship" to new students and those who have difficulty connecting. Peer Counselors also host a "Welcome BBQ" for the 9th graders and work with Middle School students on issues like bullying, internet safety, and friendship. It is with great excitement that this year Peer Counselors will work with small groups of ninth graders in the winter about positive decision making and social challenges.
Another after-school resource is the Women in Leadership program. WIL is a group for young women 14-18 years of age. The program helps participants develop leadership skills in today's society through shared cultural, social, and verbal expressions. WIL meets weekly at Scarsdale High School and is facilitated by Lauren Pomerantz. The group will be expanding to separate girls into two groups based on grade. For more information please contact Lauren at 721-2468.
Parent Support Groups are a unique resource offered to the parents of Scarsdale and is continually growing. Parent Support Groups meet monthly providing parents an opportunity to establish an atmosphere and structure where they can help one another deal with the challenges of adolescence. Parents ask questions about the development of their teenagers and find answers to problems without precedent. For information about how to join a Parent Support Group, please contact our Parent Support Group Coordinator, Emily Vallario at 721-2642.
Both Lauren and Terry maintain offices in the High School and at SFCS. We are available before, during, and after school. All Youth Service Project counseling services are confidential. Please feel free to contact us at any time during the year with questions, comments, or concerns. Lauren can be reached at 721-2468 and Terry at 721-2675.
In addition, SFCS offers individual, family, and couple therapy, social skills groups for children, and older adult services. For more information, please contact the offices of SFCS at 723-3281.
If you DO NOT want your son or daughter to participate in the services offered through the Youth Service Project, please sign and tear off below and return to SFCS. However, there may be occasions when a Youth Outreach Worker needs to reach out to students and we will follow appropriate guidelines for keeping you informed.
We look forward to working with you and your teenager. We welcome you to the new school year and hope it is filled with positive experiences for you and your teen.
Kind Regards,
Lauren Pomerantz, LMSW Terry Frank, LCSW
