In-School Service

Volunteer Service Committee  ~  In-School Service

What is In-School Service?

•    Student volunteers use one free period or study hall each week to help teachers or staff members who request a student volunteer for that time slot
•    Many individual teachers request student volunteers; volunteers are also usually needed in the library, the computer center, the offices, and the audio-visual department
•    In-school volunteering is especially convenient for freshmen, who are not allowed to leave the school grounds during the school day
•    For those who cannot volunteer after school, this is a chance to volunteer during school hours
•    This is a great opportunity for students to get to know teachers and staff, and to quickly feel part of the school, while contributing a meaningful service to the school
•    Some students choose to continue their In-School Service volunteer positions throughout their years in the high school, having established rewarding working relationships with teachers and staff
•    Students who fulfill their volunteer assignment conscientiously and for at least 20 hours during the school year, are invited to participate in the Volunteer Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 15th

What are a student volunteer’s responsibilities?

•    This is a weekly time commitment, unless otherwise arranged by the student and teacher
•    Teachers and staff are usually very understanding of special study needs on a particular day, of planned absences for personal reasons, or of changes in a student’s class schedule as the year goes on
•    It is important to tell the teacher or staff member if the student is not able to volunteer on a particular day

Who does a student volunteer work for?

Students may request the department for which he or she would prefer to volunteer
•    Assignments are made with these preferences in mind
•    The In-School Service Committee will try to match the students’ preferences with staff requests, but cannot guarantee such placements
•    A student may also make his or her own arrangement to volunteer with a specific teacher
o    Both the student and teacher should hand in their forms indicating the specifics of their volunteer arrangement, in order to be recognized for their work

How does a student sign up for In-School volunteering?

•    An In-School Service Volunteer Form has been handed out to each student—just fill it out and return the form to the In-School Service box, in the Guidance Office, by Friday, September 28
•    Also, the PTA will hold a Volunteer Service Fair during the lunch periods on Thursday, September 27
•    The fair will be held in the Brewster Road foyer, the commons, and the cafeteria foyer—Students can fill out the forms right at the fair

How will I find out what volunteer assignment I got?

•    A few weeks after the fair, students will receive a telephone call from a PTA parent volunteer, as well as a postcard, confirming the volunteer position assigned to them and making sure that the student is still interested in volunteering
o    Most volunteer assignments will begin in mid October

Can I volunteer after school or on the weekends?

In-school service is only during the school day, but there are many other committees and clubs organized at Scarsdale High School, which are geared towards community service
•    Many organizations will be represented at the Volunteer Fair such as: Habitat for Humanity, Midnight Run, White Plains Hospital, tutoring at the Coachman Hotel
•    Students may sign up to volunteer for any of these organizations at the fair
•    Students who meet the 20 hour requirement at one of these community organizations will also be recognized at the May 15th Volunteer Service Recognition Assembly

Volunteer Service

September 2007

Dear Parents and Students,

Scarsdale High School students have many opportunities to help out in our community through volunteer service.  There are a variety of organizations, both in our school and in our community, that need and welcome student volunteers.

Through Community Service, students can help children, the elderly, patients in hospitals, the homeless, and the disabled.  Reaching out to others in need can be a fulfilling use of students’ free time after school and on the weekends.  Through In-School Service, students may choose to help teachers and staff in various capacities during a free period or study hall.  This is a convenient opportunity for students to use free time, during school hours, to get to know teachers and staff while providing a meaningful service to the high school.  Please refer to the shspta.org website and click on Volunteer Service Info for descriptions of some of the agencies, programs, and clubs in which students can become involved.

On Thursday, September 27, from 11:30 AM - 1:15 PM, our committee will host a Volunteer Service Fair where students can speak with representatives from various community organizations and members of the Volunteer Service Committee. While each organization has its own requirements as to age, experience and time commitment, there is certainly something for everyone.

All students who volunteer a minimum of 20 hours during the course of the school year will be honored at the Volunteer Service Recognition Assembly.   This event will be held the evening of Thursday, May 15, 2008, in the High School Auditorium.  Mr. Klemme, the Scarsdale High School principal, will present all students with certificates in recognition of their accomplishments.

We look forward to facilitating the wonderful work students do in our community and our school.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

PTA Volunteer Service Committee
